MASTERWORKS OF CHINESE ART

Masterworks of Chinese Art from the Rosalind Ching Pastor
Collection. This art exhibition presents over fifty superb
examples of Chinese art from the collection of Rosalind Ching
Pastor. Born into a Shanghai family of art collectors. While
focusing on porcelains of the Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644-1911)
dynasties, the Pastor collection also covers a broad chronological
span, and an eclectic variety of materials. Honolulu Academy

CELEBRATING THE WHIMSY OF CHILDREN AND FAMILY

A selection of hand-printed photographs by Heidi Anderson
is on exhibit at the Art of Vision Gallery at the Laser Eye
Center of Hawaii. Anderson specializes in black and white
and hand-painted portraits that artfully capture the spirit
of the children and families she photographs. The public is
invited to view the “Celebrating the Whimsy of Children
and Family” exhibit through September 30, 2005. Admission

SPIRITED BRAVERY: SAMURAI SPIRIT AND BUDô
MASTERS IN JAPANESE ART

Explore the spirit of the samurai (or bushi—military
gentry) and the path of the budô (martial art) masters
through paintings, prints, calligraphy and byôbu (folding
screens) in this new exhibit. Presented in partnership with
Robyn Buntin of Honolulu, this exhibit reveals the samurai
spirit and ideals of loyalty, honor, courage and humility
through various art forms. Although the samurai class came
to an end in 1878, the budô masters of the late 19th
and 20th century show, through their calligraphy and ideals,
the continuation of this spirit and cultural legacy.

WOOD SKIN INK: THE JAPANESE AESTHETIC IN
MODERN TATTOOING

This fascinating exhibition explores the influence of the
Edo period ukiyoe (woodblock prints) on the present-day tattoo
artist. The exhibit will show the role that the ukiyoe images
play in the formation of a modern tattoo movement that is
now truly global—stretching from Japan to America—in
which the Japanese aesthetic hugely impacted our society,
while also inspiring a group of working tattoo masters today.
In partnership with the Hui No'eau Visual Arts Center on Maui
and sponsored by the Robyn Buntin of Honolulu.
